UNEP and ANEj Cooperative Conference for Understanding Chemicals and Waste Management

The Somali Media for Environment, Science, Health and Agriculture (SOMESHA) thrilled to take part the first ever African environmental journalist’s online gathering on July 6, 2021 organized by the African Network of Environmental Journalists (ANEJ) in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The UNEP and ANEJ African media professionals gathering was a series of capacity building and awareness raising briefing sessions to environmental journalists in Africa and discussed on a number of issues related to environmental governance.

These briefing sessions are organized through the Africa, Caribbean and the Pacific (ACP) programme supporting the multilateral environmental agreements (ACP MEAs

3). In continuation of the session held on 4th May 2021 focusing on issues of biodiversity and CBD COP 15, this session focuses on issues of chemicals and waste management and related multilateral processes, such as the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS Conventions) and will help journalists and media professionals from Africa prepare for the forthcoming Conference of Parties meeting of the BRS Convention that will be held in two sessions during 2021 and 2022.

Nearby 60 journalists and media professionals were attended including 10 more guest speakers from African Environmental ministries and UNEP as well as FAO.

It was imperative gathering informatively and educatively that the participants in the meeting as well as other guests from the UN agencies international organizations was made a tremendous discussions and  continue to engage with with each other in particularly the ANEJ and UNEP in raising awareness on key issues related to safe and better management of the environment.

The Secretary General of SOMESHA Mr. Daud Abdi Daud who was attended the meeting and representing Somali journalists fraternity thanked the gathering organizers and moderators from UNEP and ANEJ, Dr Balakrishna Pisupati. Of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Mr. Sidi El Moctar Cheiguer, President of ANEJ.
